Fibertect® Dry Decon Mitt
Background: First responders face a wide range of chemical threats, including chemical warfare agents and toxic industrial chemicals. To deal with this largely unknown threat, responders require a flexible, inexpensive, and broad-spectrum protective fabric system.TSWG, in partnership with DHS, facilitated the development and testing of Fibertect, a fabric encapsulated activated carbon dry decontaminant product which is commercially available from First Line Technology, LLC.
Requirement or Problem: Develop and test a family of flexible fabric products that can address the protection of military and first responders against chemical warfare agents (CWA) and toxic industrial chemicals (TICs).
Application: First Line Technology has adapted the fabric into a mitt for decontamination at the request of the Army National Guard. It has proven to be an effective decontamination tool.
Technical Description: The Fibertect Mitt is a three-layer, inert, flexible, drapable, nonwoven composite substrate for absorbing and adsorbing CWAs and TICs. The Mitt design allows for easy clean-up of bulk chemicals on people, weapons and sensitive equipment and can be worn over gloves. The three layers of material consist of a top and bottom fabric with a center layer of fibrous activated carbon that is needle punched into a composite fabric. The top and bottom layers provide structural coherence, mechanical strength and abrasion resistance. The Fibertect Mitt is non-particulate, devoid of loose particles, and effective in decontaminating sensitive parts of military equipment.
Advantages & Limitations The Fibertect Mitt is self-contained and packaged for easy use, storage, and transport. Materials used in the outside layers may vary to provide both absorption and adsorption properties and multiple functional uses:
- Absorbs and Adsorbs Toxic Materials
- Wipes Away Bulk Chemicals
- Decontamination of Personnel, Weapons, and Sensitive Equipment
- Fabric Retains Toxic Vapor
- Devoid of Loose Particles
- Indefinite Shelf Life
Fibertect can also be packaged into Personal Decontamination Kits (PDK) and used in conjunction with Reactive Skin Decontamination Lotion (RSDL) to provide more effective decontamination.
Test and Evaluation Results: TSWG supported the testing of the Fibertect product when used in conjunction with RSDL at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The Fibertect/RSDL combination proved superior in all testing results against 30 comparable products for decontaminating against CWAs and TICs. Government organizations may obtain a copy of the test report via e-mail through pubs@cttso.gov.
